Starting from the case dimensions, the 20 ATMOS Blue Heron has an incredibly versatile diameter of 40mm, which hits the sweet spot for many wrists. Having a lug to lug distance of 48mm with a gentle downwards curve on the lugs and a case height of about 13mm, the watch is well-proportioned and comfortably hugs the wrist. Having a 20mm lug width allows this piece to be paired with a multitude of strap options.

The finishing on the case is done impeccably well with a satin brushed finish on the top and a high polish at the side of the case, this finishing follows through to the stainless steel bracelet as well. The crown system has been significantly refined and improved over the previous generations, the deeper grooves and more substantial screw threads provide a better grip and a positive screw-down action. To top it off, the crown is tastefully signed with the prestigious Von Büren logo.

Sunburst blue dial with ceramic bezel

One of the main highlights of the 20 ATMOS Blue Heron is the blue and black combination. The stunning new blue bezel insert elevates the look of what would be a conventional black dial and bezel dive watch. Inspired by the alluring blue and black feathers of the great blue heron (Ardea herodias), an Aves class of birds that are uncommonly found in North America. Sans the full black aesthetic, the glossy blue ceramic bezel insert adds a splash of colour and wrist presence to the watch, while it functions like a proper 120-click unidirectional, 60-minutes bezel. Achieving the superior scratch resistance and luxurious qualities of the bezel insert requires an intricate process - Firstly, the outline of the insert is cut out to shape to be fitted accurately in the bezel. Afterwards, the numerals and markers are meticulously engraved by machines with precision and clarity. Subsequently, the engraved ceramic bezel insert is super heated to an astounding 1500 degrees to harden and purify the ceramic.

Quality Hand finished in Switzerland

The 20 ATMOS Blue Heron retains the iconic dial design reminiscent of classic dive watches. The deep black face of the dial contrasts well with the white applied indices and hands, which makes the dial extremely legible, just as a dive watch should be. The indices and hands are treated with Superluminova lume that glows a bright and vibrant green in dark lighting conditions. The date wheel rests on the 3 o’clock position, replacing one of the indices, which gives the dial a balanced and symmetrical look. Protecting the dial is a piece of flat sapphire crystal with 2.5 times magnifying date cyclops, coated with anti-reflective treatment on the underside.

The 20 ATMOS Blue Heron is driven by a Swiss made 25 jewel ETA 2824-2 / Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement which has a 4 Hz beat rate of 28,800 beats per hour (BPH) which features handwinding and hacking capabilities. This movement is widely popular even in many other Swiss brands as it has been proven to be a robust and reliable “workhorse” movement.
