When it comes to watches, dive watches are probably one of the most distinct and popular choices for many watch aficionados. For decades, the bold characteristics of a dive watch have been held to high regard for its practicality, function and design, fitting right into place in any watch collection. Squale has been a brand with an exceptional pedigree in producing dive watches since 1959. From manufacturing watch cases to many respected Swiss watch brands such as Tag Heuer, Doxa, Blancpain and Sinn to supplying timepieces to the Italian Navy’s Diving Corps, Squale has established themselves to become a prominent name to hardcore watch enthusiasts as well as seasoned professional divers.
The Squale Ref. 1521 50 ATMOS line of watches is based off an iconic case design that was produced since the 60s, this timeless design has encompassed itself to modern day Squale watches that look as amazing as it did back then. As a distinguished casemaker in the origins of Squale’s illustrious history, the case of the 50 ATMOS Onda Arancia reflects on what Squale stood for since its beginnings - Producing high quality watch cases. The 316L stainless steel ‘Von Büren’ case measures in with a 41mm diameter and a lug to lug distance of 48mm, a well proportioned size for a contemporary diver. Finishes on the case are executed skillfully with a high polish finish on the top of the lugs and the side of the case. The gentle downward curve of the lugs allow the watch to contour around the wrist for a comfortable fit.
The unique case construction grants the 50 ATMOS Onda Arancia a modest 500m of water resistance without the need of a conventional helium escape valve. On top of that, the watch maintains a slim case profile, having a thickness of only 12.5mm despite the capable water resistance, truly an innovative feature that showcases Squale’s excellence in watchmaking. At the 4 o’clock position, the screw-down crown is neatly tucked under the case construction against accidental knocks that may harm the movement.

Being a dive watch, the 50 ATMOS Onda Arancia houses a matte black 120-click unidirectional dive bezel designed to time underwater operations with its lume pip at the 12 o’clock position. The stainless steel bezel insert features 3D-raised markers, giving a tactile feel of the raised markers when rotating the bezel. To protect the bezel against scratches, the insert is given a black DLC treatment for superior scratch resistance and a sleek look that contrasts well against the bright dial.
The striking orange dial is certainly the main attraction of the 50 ATMOS Onda Arancia, exerting a strong wrist presence. Dive watches with bright colored dials have gained popularity over the years, serving the functional purpose of enhanced visibility while being aesthetically pleasing. In the 60s, Squale produced cases for Doxa, another brand widely known for their dive watches. It has been said that Urs Eschle, the designer behind the highly respected Doxa Sub 300, experimented with various colors of dials in the murky waters of Lake Neuchâtel to conclude orange was the most effective in underwater visibility, this paved the way for many other watch brands to adopt the use of bright-colored dials in dive watches.

Under dark lighting conditions, the Superluminova luminous paint on the hour markers, as well as the minute, hour and second hands glows a bright and vibrant green, staying visible even in the deep depths of the ocean. At the 3 o’clock position, the date complication replaces an hour marker, retaining the dial’s symmetry. The dial is protected by a piece of sapphire crystal for added scratch resistance.
The 50 ATMOS Onda Arancia is powered by a Swiss made 25 jewel ETA 2824-2 / Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement which has a 4 Hz beat rate of 28,800 beats per hour (BPH) which features handwinding and hacking capabilities. This movement is widely popular even in many other Swiss brands as it has been proven to be a robust and reliable “workhorse” movement.

The watch is complete with the supplied tropic top rubber strap, ensuring a secure fit on the wrist with its high tensile strength and durability, suitable for diving adventures. This strap is also designed specifically to resist saltwater corrosion and UV rays, providing confidence in the use underwater. Perforations on the strap ensures that the strap stays breathable, allowing the watch to be worn comfortably for prolonged periods.
When days are gloomy, a little spark of orange could lift your spirits up when you glance down at your wrist. The 50 ATMOS Onda Arancia embodies the proud Squale heritage and cutting-edge Swiss watchmaking to produce a watch you would truly be proud of.
