The Squale Ref.1521 50 ATMOS collection has been the staple model of what it used to be, in the 1960s and 70s the iconic skin-diver watch. Many dive watch enthusiasts acknowledged that Squale has been making this tropical dive watch cases for many brands like Aquastar, Doxa and Blancpain to name a few. Today, Squale continues to emerge without much changes to the original for collectors today, allowing much enjoyment in ownership of the unique design, synonymous with the Squale brand.

Though not much has been changed, in recent years there have been a few improvements in the case construction and finishing through the use of modern-day machinery and technology. However, the quintessential skin-diver look from their archives stayed the same, giving watch enthusiasts much enjoyment of a retro-vibe, sturdy and reliable dive watch.
In Baselworld 2019, we bring forth the latest Squale 50 ATMOS Onda Mezzanotte.
Unique wave dial with applied markers
The Squale 50 ATMOS Onda Mezzanotte; where “Mezzanotte” is Italian for the dark blue midnight sky.
The Onda Mezzanotte is where Squale took the old ingredients and made a new recipe out of it. The case dimension stays true at 41mm wide and 48mm lugs to lugs, similar to the Squale 50 Atmos Blue. It is boasting a 500m water resistant without the use of the conventional Helium escapement valve due to its unique case design.
The unique case construction also meant that the 500m watch could be kept at a slim 12.5mm. The contemporary footprint means that the 50 ATMOS Onda Mezzanotte is exceptionally comfortable on the wrist. Topping things off, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating for added toughness and clarity.
Polished raised markers with matte background
With the similarities to its precursor, this is where it ends. The Onda takes a whole new aesthetic upgrade that never been seen before in the 50 ATMOS collection. First off, the black graduated bezel which is made from stainless steel is now treated in black DLC. The DLC process gives it a better scratch resistance and aesthetics. The black but polished raised numerals and markers against a matte background gives it an athletic looks. This reminisce of the same style as the bezel found on the Yacht-Master. With this bezel, it not only gives a better marine style aesthetics, but also allows users to enjoy little bit of intangible aspect when they rotate or brush their fingers over the raised markers. Did we mention the making of this bezel is extremely time consuming?
Classic Squale case design
Another main feature has to be its mesmerising deep blue dial. The midnight-blue dial uses the true-to-vintage applied hour markers, usually found on other Squale unique/vintage models. The highlight of the dial is its unique wave texture that is engraved on the surface with the Squale logo and model name placed nicely on it. The textured dial with faceted hour markers gives the dial a sense of quality and timelessness. It seems to draw a more nautical and oceanic feel, giving the wearer additional satisfaction when glancing at it to see the time(or not).
It is powered by an ETA automatic caliber, ETA2824-2/SW 200, élaboré, operating at 28,800 bph (4 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 25 jewels with a power reserve of 38 hours.
The Squale 50 ATMOS comes with a vintage mocha coloured leather, while you can find more about the different characteristics of the various straps here.
The all-new 50 ATMOS Onda Mezzanotte excel infusing their heritage with a modern flair, blending the textured bezel and unique wave dial works with its 60s iconic diver case in a harmonious manner.
We do recommend this model to fans and collectors of Squale watches, or solely for watch enthusiasts who want a 60s style dive watch, with more visual appeal and texture that allows one to enjoy, and wants a watch that stands out from a world that is filled with extensive amount of conventional dive watches, this is the watch for you.
