For the last 111 years, Oris has been creating functional, accurate and reliable timepieces for ‘real people’. The latest watch to bring the independent Swiss company’s philosophy to life is the Big Crown ProPilot GMT. It’s been designed for time-zone-jumping pilots and travellers, and features a newly developed Oris GMT movement.
The elite Big Crown ProPilot range launched in 2014 and continued the rich pilot-watch tradition Oris began in 1938 with the original Big Crown. This new GMT model has a multi-piece 45mm case crafted from heavy-duty, matt-satin-finished stainless steel, and a coin-edged top ring inspired by jet engine turbines. The watch is water-resistant to 10 bar (100 metres).
Inside it is Oris Calibre 748, a newly developed Oris automatic GMT movement. This gives the watch a second time zone, indicated via a yellow-tipped central hand that points to a 24- hour scale running around an outer dial ring.
Oris pilot’s watches have always focused on legibility – in the cockpit, a watch becomes an instrument, and it’s important to be able to read it at a glance. To minimise glare, the ProPilot GMT has an anti-reflective coating on the inside of the domed sapphire crystal, while its white hour and minute hands are filled with Super-LumiNova®. The dial’s Arabic numerals are printed in Super-LumiNova®.
The Big Crown ProPilot GMT’s textile strap is equipped with Oris’s patented folding clasp system, an intuitive design inspired by an aircraft safety belt. It’s released by lifting a tab marked ‘LIFT’, an aviation-themed solution that’s unique to Oris.
The high-performance Big Crown ProPilot GMT is another example of Oris’s passion for producing ‘real watches for real people.’
