Alongside the release of Seiko’s modern re-interpretations of the 1959 Alpinist in three gorgeous flavors (Ref. SBDC147, SBDC145 and SBDC149), Seiko unveiled a faithful representation of the 1959 Laurel Alpinist, a modern re-creation that captures the adventurous spirit of the glorious vintage model in all its glory. Standing apart from Seiko’s 1959 Alpinist re-interpretations, the Seiko Prospex 1959 Alpinist Re-Creation Ref. SBEN001 is prominently closer to the original Alpinist with numerous gorgeous vintage references, especially with its retro bund strap and its minimalist dial. Nonetheless, performance is uncompromised here with modern specifications to fit the needs of modern watch connoisseurs.

Seiko Prospex 1959 Alpinist Re-Creation - Ltd Ed 1959pcs Ref. SBEN001
Ever since the fan favourite green Seiko Alpinist Ref. SARB017 made its debut in 2007, the classic mountaineering watch gained an immense cult following to a truly unprecedented level as an iconic collection synonymous with affordability and excellent performance. The Alpinist forged its honorable cult status in the watch community by offering a fine Japanese timepiece that offered so much value for the money, everything about it seemed to be what we enthusiasts wanted in a watch. And yes, it is one beautiful Seiko.

As a tool watch originally created for “Yama-Otoko”, or mountain men in Japanese, the Alpinist provided robust specifications that could handle rugged mountainous terrains. While we enjoy a whole range of splendid sports watches from Seiko today, the Alpinist holds great historical significance for the brand as Seiko’s first real attempt at creating a dependable sports watch. Lamentably, Seiko appalled the world when they bid goodbye to the esteemed SARB017, announcing its discontinuation in 2018 after 11 years of production. “When one door closes, another one opens.” This quote from Alexander Graham Bell couldn't be more true for Seiko when they released their latest generation of Alpinists in 2020, joining the Prospex line up with a set of outstanding new upgrades.

Seiko in-house calibre 6L35 movement
The 36.6mm case diameter is one of the most notable traits that highlights its strong vintage inspiration, measuring only a tad larger than the 35mm case of the original in order to accommodate an automatic movement (an upgrade from the 17 jewel hand-wound Seikosha movement). Constructed out of 316L stainless steel, the Prospex 1959 Alpinist Re-Creation Ref. SBEN001 is relatively slim with a thickness of merely 11.1mm, allowing the watch to rest reasonably flush on the wrist even while resting on its supplied bund strap. Paired with a lug to lug distance of just under 44mm, the dimensions truly embrace the proportions of its 1950s predecessor. The SBEN001 is finished entirely in a highly-polished finish that shines brilliantly in the light, reflecting on the exceptional quality and fine Japanese craftsmanship of the Japanese watchmaking giant.

Nonetheless, the compact dimensions does not suggest you’re about to embrace a small watch, the 2-part calf leather bund watch consisting of a deep brown leather strap with robust jagged stitchings and a secondary grey leather protective cuff band significantly amplifies the entire presence of the watch to present a bold and rugged appeal on the wrist. Just like the original Laurel Alpinist, the supplied bund strap is intended to enhance robustness of the timepiece and to protect the wrist against direct skin contact against the watch regardless of how intensely cold or hot it may get in the extreme weather conditions, especially in the unforgiving temperatures during high-altitude mountaineering. On top of its practicality, the bund strap certainly sets a striking identity for this stunning timepiece.

The stainless steel case carries the Alpinist's baton

Perhaps the most distinctive aspect of the Prospex 1959 Alpinist Re-Creation Ref. SBEN001 can be found right on its black dial that bears a close resemblance to the classic 1959 Alpinist. Like the Laurel Alpinist, the glossy black dial features large iconic triangular markers at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 position and an inner minute track. For an exceptional glow in the dark, the applied markers and faceted dauphine handsets are treated with Seiko’s proprietary LumiBrite luminous paint in white.

While the classic 1959 model housed a no-date dial, the SBEN001 features a black date window situated between the 4 and 5 o’clock marker that discreetly blends into the black dial, retaining the dial’s simplicity. To top it off, the dial is protected by a scratch-resistant highly-domed sapphire crystal treated with anti-reflective coating, closely resembling the appearance of the domed acrylic crystal of the original.

Seiko luminous glows brightly in the dark

A modern re-creation calls for a modern engine, the Prospex 1959 Alpinist Re-Creation Ref. SBEN001 is driven by the in-house Seiko Calibre 6L35 automatic movement. This 26 jewel hand-winding and hacking movement performs extremely well as one of Seiko’s higher-end slim movements operating with a 4 Hz beat rate of 28,800 beats per hour and a healthy power reserve of 45 hours.  Enclosed in a screw-in steel caseback, the watch presents a capable water resistance of 100m despite not being a diver’s watch.

Limited to only 1959 pieces, the Seiko Prospex 1959 Alpinist Re-Creation Ref. SBEN001 is a unique timepiece that proudly embodies Seiko’s rich heritage, bringing the 1959 Alpinist back to life with the skillful art of modern Japanese watchmaking.  Displaying refinement in every detail, there’s so much to love for this truly iconic and timeless design that gave birth to the modern day Seiko Alpinist, a true legend that will continue to be well-loved by the watch community for many years to come.
