Spirit Automatic Sport Black Ref. SZSB015

In late 2019 Seiko discreetly launched a fire collaboration with a repute Japanese Retailer for their 35th Anniversary celebration. They were vintage-inspired field watch (Ref. SZSB006) and a dress one (Ref. SZSB007). The latter model has inspired a whole new collection in Seiko's collection in 2020. The main aspects of this range reflect how Seiko took the design from the coveted SARB line, upgrading them in terms of the new case geometry and dial layout. Today, we shall take a look at the latest Seiko Spirit Automatic Sport Black Ref. SZSB015.

Seiko Spirit Automatic Sport Black Ref. SZSB015
First off, the Seiko Spirit Automatic Sport is a JDM model made available only in Japan. This JDM is denoted with the "MADE IN JAPAN" at 6 on the dial. And the good news is that we at Gnomon provide these JDMs Seiko timepieces, including the latest model, for all of you... The difference might be subtle, but this means a lot for Seiko collectors.

At first sight, the 100m water-resistant, 40mm stainless steel case of the Seiko Spirit Automatic Sport reminisces the previous SARB character, but it begs to differ. The case has been sharpened, quite literally, with a more dynamic profile shown through its case middle and thicker bezel. Further, Seiko manages the lugs to lugs distance at 48mm and a height of mere 12mm, lending a balanced overall when one strapped it on the wrist. The 2mm increased from the previous SARB line allows it to have more presence, allowing to appreciate the more exceptional multi-finished case done in both satin-brushed and high polishing. The mirror-polished case band and bezel contrasted cleanly with its satin case top, which creates a pleasant case profile.

Another distinctive feature of the Spirit Automatic Sport got to be its "eagle's beak" crown guard that flanges the knurled crown. The curving lugs have gentle curves towards the wrist, and it ends flush with the screw-in case-back. Oh, we have to mention that Seiko nails the drilled lug holes straight out of the park here, allowing the wearer to swap out its current strap for any of their choice (as long as its 20mm).

Right underneath its first-of-its-kind flat Hardlex crystal with a magnifying Cyclops is where the Seiko Spirit Automatic Sport shines eminently. The SZSB015 is first of its kind and took an alternative route, as opposed to the "dressier" side of the Spirit collection. From the unique capsule applied markers, to the semi-skeletonize handset. The SZSB015 sets out to be the sportier embodiment of their Spirit Automatic Sport line. Without further ado, let's dive into them.

Starting from the markers, a total of twelves capsule-shaped applied onto its gloss black dial, where the one at 12 o'clock gets double up. All of them have high polished trims, which almost feels like those on the GS. They produced an excellent lustre when lights hit on each marker, only to be complemented with Seiko's Lumibrite that glows brightly in the dark for night readability. The same execution can be seen on the new sword-shaped handset, with one half being skeletonized and luminous applied on the other, all these in the name of Seiko's finesse. To a greater extent, both the applied indices and handset are polished individually by hand to a high standard, using the same GS Zaratsu polishing technique.

As we mentioned earlier, the date display has the beautiful "GS" fat fonts in black with a white background that blends in with the whole dial. With that, the numbers will always fill up nicely with excellent readability through the "bubble" magnifier.

Both the applied "Seiko" logo and the texts on the top and bottom of the dial, respectively, are derives directly with the previous SARB models, which seemingly in continuation with the spirit of its predecessors, apologizing for the pun. Further, the all-inclusive elements on the dial showcase Seiko's craftsmanship, in results of tightly elevated execution with a pleasant dose of sportiness.

Inside the Spirit Automatic Sport, seen through the case-back, exhibits Seiko's original 4R35 automatic caliber. The 4R35 is a direct upgrade for Seiko's long-standing 7S26 movements, with few notable updates. The reliable movement operates at 21,600 BPH (3 Hertz) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 23 jewels with a power reserve of approximately 41 hours through a Spron 110 mainspring.

For a nice finishing touch, the watch comes fitted with a sports steel metal bracelet that gets tapering from lug to clasp, while featuring the satin-brushed finishing on top with polished sides, giving it a versatile look and wear. Strapping it on, deployment clasp is holding it with push-button release.

Priced below $1000, the Seiko Spirit Automatic Sport Black Ref. SZSB015 is value for money. It is a good upgrade from the processor with a high level of effort put into its built and finishing, both on the dial and case. If you are looking for an everyday watch that has that will not break the bank and enjoys fine finishing, the new Mechanical Spirit is undoubtedly worth considering.
